Rural youth Dongzi (Shi Yu) comes to Wuhan alone to rely on his fellow townsman Gao Ping (Guo Tao) in order to change his fate, becoming a porter known as "Lifter" by the people of Wuhan, earning barely enough to get by. Gao Ping, seeking quick money, joins others in extortion but is unexpectedly injured by his accomplices during the process.
