On August 31, 1937, during the Battle of Shanghai, Yao Ziqing was ordered to lead over 500 men to defend Baoshan City. The Japanese army launched a frenzied attack on Baoshan through coordinated land, sea, and air operations to expand their landing area. Despite being poorly equipped, facing unfavorable terrain, and lacking reinforcements, the intelligent and courageous Yao Ziqing led the entire battalion to hold the isolated city against the overwhelming enemy forces.
