In 1928, Los Angeles, Christine Collins (Angelina Jolie) works at a telephone exchange and raises her son Walter (Gattlin Griffith) alone. Their life is simple and happy. However, their lives are soon disrupted when Christine returns from work one day to find her son missing. Under public pressure, the corrupt Los Angeles police find Walter five months later, but Christine discovers that this is not her biological son. She repeatedly demands the police clarify the facts and help her find the real Walter, but she faces obstruction and blame, and is even committed to a mental institution on charges of obstructing police work. Pastor Gustav Briegleb (John Malkovich), who often exposes police brutality, advocates for the unfortunate plight of this poor woman. Meanwhile, agent Lester (Michael Kelly) inadvertently discovers a major serial child murder case while investigating a smuggling case. The disappearance of young Walter seems to be gaining clarity…
