Sir Wilfrid Robarts (played by Charles Laughton), a famous criminal defense lawyer in London, is undergoing treatment for a heart condition but remains physically weak. On the first day home to recuperate, a nurse strictly monitors his medication and prohibits alcohol and cigarettes. The butler has even installed an elevator for easier access to the upstairs. However, all this caring and attention has no effect on this defiant and sharp-tongued barrister; instead, a lawsuit excites him. Lawyer Mayhew and the client, Leonard Vole (played by Tyrone Power), pay him a visit to ask him to take on the case. It turns out, Vole has met a wealthy woman, and they hit it off quite well. Although her servants look down on his egg beater invention, she is affectionate toward him and even rewrites her will to leave £80,000 to him. However, the wealthy woman falls victim to foul play. Consequently, Vole becomes the police's prime suspect. His only witness is his wife, Christine (played by Marlene Dietrich), but her coldness and composure when she visits raise Sir Wilfrid's suspicions that there might be more to the story. Behind this intricate and mysterious case lies a web of interconnected, untold secrets... This film is adapted from Agatha Christie's novel of the same name.
