At the end of the Korean War, in a village near a U.S. military base in South Korea, the lives of most residents are overshadowed by the emptiness, confusion, and despair following the war, with few paths to salvation. The dark-skinned Shang Wu (Yang Dong-gun), born to his mother (Bang In-jeong) during the war with an American Black soldier, has faced discrimination since childhood, developing a violent temperament; when he has nowhere to vent his anger, he resorts to beating his mother. His mother, unwilling to accept her fate, repeatedly writes letters to America, hoping her Black husband will bring them to the United States, but she always receives replies marked “recipient unknown.” His friend En-woo (Kim Young-min), who makes a living through painting, is often bullied by thugs due to his frail constitution, and when the girl he loves is humiliated and given to American soldiers, he can only watch helplessly, driven to despair.
