Directed by Roland Joffé, this epic religious adventure film features somewhat stereotypical characters and a somewhat convoluted plot, but the visuals are spectacular. Certain scenes are breathtakingly beautiful, and the chemistry between Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro is impressive. The story unfolds in the 18th century, where Spanish priest Gabriel is sent to the jungles of South America to establish a mission for the Guarani people. He encounters slave trader Rodrigo, and together they travel to their destination, where Rodrigo seeks redemption for the guilt he feels over killing his brother. As their missionary efforts gain some momentum, a war breaks out locally due to conflicts between the Portuguese and Spanish governments over colonial territories, leading to a tragic conclusion.
