In the blink of an eye, it is now 1979. The second-generation godfather, Michael Corleone (played by Al Pacino), has reached old age. In search of redemption for his soul, Michael gradually ends the family’s criminal empire and turns to legitimate business. Michael's son, Tony, loves art and has no intention of taking over the family business. Michael decides to name his older brother Sonny’s illegitimate son, the hot-headed and womanizing Vincent (played by Andy Garcia), as his successor to become the third godfather. Michael’s beloved daughter Mary (played by Sofia Coppola) falls in love with Vincent, which is opposed by her father, leading to a growing distance between father and daughter. To legitimize the family assets, Michael prepares to invest in the "Immobiliare" group through his connections in the Vatican. However, he faces covert obstruction from enemies, and the pope’s passing makes matters even more complicated. In desperation, Michael has no choice but to resort to violence to solve problems, and his loved ones become embroiled in this bloody storm.
