Ethan (Joaquin Phoenix) and his wife Grace (Jennifer Connelly) never expected that their beloved son Joey (Sean Curley) would leave this world before them. However, when that speeding car struck Joey, everything that happened became so real and unchangeable. Before this, lawyer Dwight (Mark Ruffalo) was enjoying a rare pleasant evening with his son Lucas (Eddie Alderson), and in a few hours, Dwight would have to return Lucas to his ex-wife Ruth (Mira Sorvino).
