The mafia power in South Boston, Massachusetts, is extremely rampant, with the largest gang being the Irish mob led by Frank (Jack Nicholson). In order to eliminate them, the police decide to send police academy graduate Billy (Leonardo DiCaprio) undercover. The sarcasm from the officers frustrates Billy, who has experienced a lower-class life; he once hoped to be a proper police officer, but under pressure, he has to obey orders. After undergoing a baptism of crime and violence, he gains Frank's trust. Meanwhile, fellow graduate Colin (Matt Damon), who has gained recognition for his work in drug enforcement, is being rewarded by his superiors and is preparing to marry his girlfriend. In reality, he is a pawn planted in the police force by Frank, and the two conspire for personal gain. Both the police and the gang discover the presence of a mole, leading to a cat-and-mouse game... This film won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 79th Oscars, with Martin Scorsese receiving the Best Director award.
