Jim Street (Colin Farrell) is a member of the Los Angeles S.W.A.T. team. During a hostage rescue mission with his partner Brian Gamble (Jeremy Renner), a mistake by Brian leads the hostage to demand compensation from the government. In a fit of anger, Brian leaves the police force, and Jim is reassigned to another department, ending their friendship. Six months later, Jim, through relentless effort, returns to S.W.A.T. At this time, S.W.A.T. is commanded by Sgt. Dan 'Hondo' Harrelson (Samuel L. Jackson), with five team members, and breaks the rule of having no women by introducing the first female team member—single mother Chris Sanchez (Michelle Rodriguez). Under Harrelson's guidance, after several weeks of rigorous training, Jim and his teammates embark on their first mission: overseeing notorious drug lord Alex Montel (Olivier Martinez)—a criminal involved in drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and money laundering. After Alex Montel is arrested by the Los Angeles police, he still plans to escape the law before extradition, promising through the media that anyone who can rescue him will receive a bounty of $100 million. To claim this money, outlaws spring into action, including Jim's former partner Brian Gamble. The S.W.A.T. team faces their toughest challenge as betrayal from within and distrust from their superiors nearly drive them to the brink.
