Captain Lin Quanhai (played by Wang Xueqi), a shipping captain in his fifties, returns to his home in Chongqing after 14 years. He is so focused on his career that he has experienced two failed marriages in succession. During his absence, his 25-year-old son Lin Bo (played by Ziyi) is shot dead by the police during a supermarket robbery where he also injured someone. For Lin Quanhai, this long-lost city has undergone too many changes for him to comprehend.
