The story takes place in Australia in 1980, where Michael (Sam Neill) and his wife Lindy (Meryl Streep) are on a family trip with their three children. One night, the couple leaves their youngest child Azaria in her crib to visit friends, only to experience a tragic incident that takes Azaria's young life. What Michael and Lindy did not expect is that in addition to enduring the immense pain of losing their child, they would also face accusations that they are the real perpetrators behind the crime. Subsequently, a long trial begins, and despite the lack of key evidence, Lindy is sentenced to life imprisonment. In prison, Lindy gives birth to their fourth child, who is raised by Michael. Throughout the long years in prison, Lindy continually appeals and ultimately earns her innocence and freedom.
