The story takes place in a remote and desolate mountain village. Zhang Baomin (played by Song Yang) is a miner. One day, he is called back home by his wife, Cui Xia (played by Tan Zuo), only to find out that their son is missing. With a photo of his son, the mute Zhang Baomin embarks on a quest to find him. Along the way, he encounters the henchmen of a wealthy capitalist, Chang Wannian (played by Jiang Wu). A conflict erupts between the two parties, as Chang Wannian deceives Zhang Baomin into believing he knows the whereabouts of his son, hiding a dark secret instead. Chang Wannian has been making illegal profits by bribing and unlawfully acquiring coal mines. As his lawyer, Xu Wenjie is aware of many unspeakable secrets. The public security and judicial authorities begin investigating Chang Wannian's company, and at this critical moment, Xu Wenjie goes missing. To force Xu Wenjie to submit, Chang Wannian kidnaps his daughter.
