This film is a summary of Hou Hsiao-hsien's cinematic career. In the three segments, the ways the male (Zhang Zhen) and female (Shu Qi) protagonists express their emotions, as well as the historical context they are in, can be found reflected in Hou Hsiao-hsien's films from different periods.
