The film's director, Emilio Estevez, is the eldest son of the lead actor Martin Sheen, marking the seventh collaboration between this father-son duo in film and television. Dr. Tom (Martin Sheen) sets off to France to retrieve his son Daniel's (Emilio Estevez) body and belongings after Daniel tragically dies in France. Daniel died in the Pyrenees while on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, where he encountered a storm and peacefully left this world. This route to the cathedral is also known as the "Way of St. James." Initially, Tom's purpose was simply to bring back Daniel's remains, but upon arriving in France, he decided to walk the path that Daniel had traveled, both completed and unfinished, to better understand his son's life and to connect with his child. During this journey along the Way of St. James, Tom meets three "pilgrims" from different countries, each seeking a greater meaning in life and hoping to find solace in the secular world through walking.
