Village teacher Platonov lives a simple and plain life with his wife. At a gathering, he encounters his first love, Sofia, whom he hasn't seen for many years, stirring up fond memories of the past. To make up for his failures in his career and to pursue the sweetness of that bygone romance, Platonov begins to secretly meet with Sofia. Later, he proposes to elope and soar away with her, but Sofia refuses. Platonov finally realizes that Sofia can no longer leave behind her luxurious lifestyle, and this extramarital affair is merely a thrill sought by the woman. In despair and shame, Platonov jumps into the river to commit suicide, only to find that fate plays a trick on him again, as the water barely covers his knees. In the end, his wife rushes to the riverbank to comfort her poor husband, and the two return to their original life. This film is based on Anton Chekhov's never-released four-act play "Platonov," which he wrote in his youth, and is adapted with elements from some of Chekhov's other literary works. The creators accurately grasp the social and historical significance of the era's spirit and artistic images reflected in Chekhov's creations. The film utilizes various artistic techniques like symbolism, contrast, and exaggeration to express its theme, embedding a tragic atmosphere within the comedic plot. The cinematography is outstanding, with color, scenery, and light harmoniously integrated with the storyline, giving the film a rich lyrical essence. This film won the Golden Shell Award at the 25th San Sebastián International Film Festival in 1977.
