The story takes place during the Ming Dynasty, where Li Shizhen (played by Zhao Dan) earns the love and recognition of the people due to his exceptional medical skills and noble character. The King of Chu invites Li Shizhen to the palace to treat the prince, and the strange ailments that leave the court physicians baffled vanish under Li Shizhen's care. Li Shizhen is granted the opportunity to study in the imperial medical institute, but his one request is to ask the King of Chu to revise the "Compendium of Materia Medica." Li Shizhen cannot tolerate the outdated practices of his colleagues in the imperial medical institute and realizes that staying there will prevent him from fulfilling his aspirations. Therefore, he resigns and returns to his hometown, deciding to revise the "Compendium of Materia Medica" with his own hands. The villagers learn of Li Shizhen's ambition and extend their help to him. Li Shizhen personally verifies the efficacy of hundreds of herbal medicines, gradually perfecting the "Compendium of Materia Medica."
