Directed by the emerging filmmaker Kira Kovalienko, who is mentored by Russian cinema giant Alexander Sukhanov, the film "Caged Love" won the Un Certain Regard award at the Cannes Film Festival. It tells the story of a declining mining town where a girl is strictly controlled by her father. Even though her brother, who has been away from home for many years, promises to take her to freedom, the cage-like pain of family trauma follows her everywhere. Set against the backdrop of the 2004 Beslan hostage crisis, where Chechen militants took over a thousand hostages and negotiated with Russia, the film presents the far-reaching impact of tragedy from the perspective of survivors. While sharply portraying the cruelty of human nature and reality, the director also reveals unique youthful qualities, bringing a fresh perspective to Russian cinema.
