Berlin is guarded by two angels, one being Cassiel, who coldly observes human suffering, and the other being Damiel (Bruno Ganz), who often empathizes with human anguish. They wander around the city in loose angel robes, listening to people's prayers and quietly observing the inner worlds of humanity. The concerns of circus performer Marion (Solveig Dommartin) draw Damiel's sympathy, as the circus is struggling to stay afloat and Marion is deeply troubled. The angelic performer stirs Damiel's humanity, prompting him to become mortal in pursuit of a fulfilling romance. This film won the Best Director award at the 40th Cannes Film Festival in 1987.
