Pierre (played by Hardy Krüger) is a former French Air Force pilot whose plane crashes during a battle, resulting in his amnesia. At about thirty years old, he returns to Paris after the war and lives a monotonous life with his girlfriend Madeleine (played by Nicole Courcel), haunted by his memory loss and the aftermath of the war. One day, he encounters a little girl named Cibelle (played by Patricia Gozzi), who has been sent to a convent by her father. Upon learning of Cibelle's abandonment by her parents, Pierre starts pretending to be her father to take her out from the convent every weekend. They play by the Seine, share their own secret language, and even create their own rituals. Cibelle’s innocence seems to bring sunshine into Pierre’s troubled life, and his emotional scars slowly begin to heal. However, their pure friendship attracts suspicion, misunderstanding, and scandal from outsiders, culminating in complaints to the convent and police involvement. On a peaceful Christmas Eve, Pierre and Cibelle cuddle by the riverside, unaware of what darkness awaits them in the night… This film won the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 1963.
