With the arrival of summer vacation, a third-grade student named Masao (played by Yusuke Sekiguchi), who lost his father at a young age, is now living with his grandmother and finds the summer particularly boring. He pulls out a letter from his mother who sent it from afar and decides to visit her alone in Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture. The neighbor aunt (played by Kayoko Kishimoto) discovers this and decides to help Masao realize his wish. She takes out some money for travel expenses and arranges for her idle husband Kikujiro (played by Takeshi Kitano) to accompany Masao on his journey to find his mother. However, on the first day, Kikujiro loses all the money his wife gave him in gambling, forcing the two to walk to Aichi. After hitchhiking and causing quite a bit of trouble, Kikujiro finally gets Masao to his mother’s house, but the little boy is very disappointed. On the way back, Kikujiro tries hard to comfort him, and the two have a wonderful time together, and the summer passes just like that.
