At the end of 1944, a large amount of cash known as "golden yuan" fell from the sky, covering the ancient county town deep in the mountains of western Sichuan. The impoverished people suddenly became wealthy overnight, and various intertwined dark forces released greed, cunning, deception, desire, as well as hope, redemption, national fortune, and righteousness like trapped beasts breaking free from their cages. They resorted to counterfeit money tricks to deceive the government, which in turn gifted them with both cash and funerary money to the blind Japanese troops on the front lines in western Yunnan—a cashier and accountant who swore to accomplish financial tasks after being retrieved from a pile of dead bodies on the battlefield. Captain Wang Huaiyi (played by Nie Yuan) of the cash search squad played a cat-and-mouse cash game with the Japanese bandits, accidentally turning the dimwitted Niu Ergua into a patriotic hero.
