Larisa (played by Alisa Frejndlikh) possesses incredibly beautiful looks. Born with a silver spoon in her mouth, she now faces a family's decline and lives in a strained financial situation. Larisa has two older sisters, both of whom are married, making Larisa her mother's last hope. Her mother wishes for her to marry a wealthy man, so they can return to a life of affluence. Larisa falls in love with a man named Baratokov (played by Nikita Mikhalkov), while a postal worker named Karandyshev (played by Andrey Myagkov) fervently pursues her. Initially, the relationship between Larisa and Baratokov develops smoothly, but unforeseen circumstances arise when Baratokov goes bankrupt and chooses to leave. In her anguish, Larisa ends up succumbing to Karandyshev, and they become engaged.
