In the English countryside, a family moves into a black apartment. The father (played by Hanns Zischler) suddenly dies while tending to the garden, and the mother (played by Sinéad Cusack) falls ill, deteriorating over time. To prevent the four children from being taken by welfare services, the mother insists on not going to the hospital and eventually passes away in despair. The eldest son, Jack (played by Andrew Robertson), and the eldest daughter, Julie (played by Charlotte Gainsbourg), secretly bury their mother's body in the cement, and they live alone with their younger siblings, Tom (played by Ned Birkin) and Su (played by Alice Coulthard). The four siblings' life is tough but free. Jack and Julie develop a forbidden romance...
