In 1960, Israel announced the capture of former high-ranking Nazi official Adolf Eichmann, known as the "architect of the Holocaust," and held his trial in Jerusalem in 1961. The renowned Jewish philosopher Hannah Arendt (played by Barbara Sukowa), who had been living in the United States for many years, was invited by The New Yorker to write about the trial. However, upon witnessing the trial in Jerusalem, Arendt found herself at odds between Eichmann's explanations, public opinion, and her own philosophical reflections. When Arendt elevated Eichmann's actions to a philosophical level in her writings, her articles predictably sparked social backlash and criticism, and some of her longtime friends even severed ties with her. The once proud student of Heidegger faced a storm of controversy and discovered that everything was not as simple as she had anticipated.
