Mary (played by Charlotte Rampling), a university professor specializing in English literature, hides a long-dormant desire beneath her dignified and untouchable exterior. Her life with her husband, Jean (played by Bruno Cremer), is as bland and uneventful as water for decades. All of this is shattered by her husband's disappearance. One morning by the seaside, Jean leaves their vacation cabin alone and never returns. After this, Mary seems to exert all her effort in controlling her emotions, imagining her husband still by her side, accompanying her on shopping trips, chatting, and maintaining their routine as if nothing has changed. Shortly after, a corpse is recovered. Mary's self-induced numbness ends as she attempts to understand everything about her husband, only to discover the deep division and estrangement between them. In the process, Jean's whereabouts become increasingly mysterious, leaving his fate—alive or dead—forever uncertain…
