Drag performer Bernadette (played by Terence Stamp) and Mitzi (played by Hugo Weaving) reunite after the death of a mutual friend. Mitzi invites Bernadette to join him for a performance opportunity in a central Australian city, and Felicia (played by Guy Pearce) tags along to fulfill her dream of becoming the "Desert Queen," borrowing a converted bus for their journey. The trio sets off energetically, while the older Bernadette remains secretive about her past, leading to some trivial disputes with the young and restless Felicia. Mitzi occasionally reminisces about her marriage. They attract a lot of surprised and admiring glances as they showcase their flamboyance in the small towns they pass through. After a breakdown, a mechanic named Bob, who cannot forget Bernadette's past performances, joins their journey. They finally reach their destination; although the audience is not very enthusiastic, Mitzi meets her son, and Bernadette decides to be with Bob… The film won multiple awards, including the Oscar for Best Costume Design in 1995.
