Adapted from Liu Qing's novel "Copper Wall and Iron Cliff." In the spring of 1947, Chiang Kai-shek's bandit forces mobilized hundreds of thousands of troops to rampantly invade the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia border region. At that time, the military and civilians of the border area, under the leadership of Chairman Mao and the Central Committee, actively withdrew from Yan'an, repeatedly delivering heavy blows to the frenzied enemy. In July, our army aimed to lure the enemy northward by launching a fierce attack on Yulin City. Ensuring the grain supply for tens of thousands of field troops became a main task for the people of northern Shaanxi in their quest for victory. Shajiadian is a district in Mizhi County where a grain station was established. Many troops came to collect grain there, and supplies at the granary appeared to be running out. District Chief Cao and District Party Secretary Jin decided to send militia captain Shi Defu to the neighboring district to urge grain delivery. On the way, the grain transport team encountered an enemy air raid, but thanks to Shi Defu's calm command of air defense, they suffered no significant losses. This incident was praised by Commissioner Ge, who was traveling with them. When Commissioner Ge passed by Shajiadian to inspect the preparation for war, he specifically reminded them not only to manage the granary well but also to take care of everything comprehensively, organizing the masses to prepare for war to ensure that the people would not suffer losses. Following Commissioner Ge's instructions, Secretary Jin decided to put Shi Defu in charge of the granary and to find local villagers like Shi Yonggong, Ba Hu, and Er Mujiang to assist him. After ensuring the granary's work was properly assigned, district cadres went to the countryside to check on the war preparations. The war situation was rapidly developing, with the advancing enemy nearing the neighboring county of Suide. At that time, people were anxious, and Shi Yonggong began to waver, while landlords took the opportunity to set fires and cause destruction, leaving over 180 stones of grain at the granary. How to properly manage this grain? Shi Defu went to the Town Committee in Zhenchuan Fortress, over 30 miles from the granary, to consult with Commissioner Ge. At the time, Zhenchuan Fortress was in a tense retreat, with the enemy descending from Yulin already on the opposite riverbank. Shi Defu saw Commissioner Ge, who instructed him to issue a hundred stones of grain to the field army that night, and the remainder must be evacuated north of the main road before dawn. Finally, he told Shi Defu, "Although the enemy has occupied almost all the county towns, Chairman Mao is still in northern Shaanxi... Victory will come soon." This news greatly encouraged Shi Defu, and he rushed back to Shajiadian. That night, heavy rain poured, and mountain floods broke out. Shi Defu and others spent the entire night at the granary waiting for the troops to transport the grain. Before dawn, they received an urgent notice from Commissioner Ge, only to learn that the grain transport team couldn't come due to the road being cut off by mountain floods, and they were to mobilize the masses to evacuate the grain. That night, the enemy occupied Zhenchuan Fortress and decided to invade Wulongpu through Shajiadian the next day. The starving enemy was scavenging for grain everywhere, preparing to rob the Shajiadian granary. At dawn, the enemy's forward troops approached the village entrance, but over 80 stones of grain remained at the granary and could not be evacuated in time. Shi Defu led everyone to lay landmines and then went up the mountain to prepare to disrupt the enemy. In the most critical moment, District Chief Cao led the guerrilla team to support them, successfully repelling the enemy's attempt to seize the grain. Shi Defu and others again descended the mountain to evacuate the grain, burying whatever could not be evacuated locally. After another tense night, as soon as the grain was finally evacuated, the enemy entered the village, and Ba Hu heroically sacrificed himself while covering the grain convoy. Shi Defu was busy covering Shi Yonggong's retreat and then rushed back to the granary to find the grain accounts that Shi Yonggong had no time to take. Just as he hid the accounts under a cliff outside the village, he was unfortunately wounded and captured by the enemy. The enemy forces were in a state of panic over food supplies and believed that capturing Shi Defu would lead them to the grain, so they doubled the torture and aggressively interrogated him about the grain's location. However, they gained nothing except for being fiercely scolded by Shi Defu. Despite his serious injuries, he continued to resist. That night, he and other detained masses killed the guard and escaped from the enemy's clutches. When he reached below the cliff and found the grain books still buried underground, it felt like a heavy stone fell from his heart. At that time, our army had begun a fierce counterattack. Shi Defu met Secretary Jin and Shi Yonggong at the battlefield on the top of Shajiadian. He carefully handed the grain accounts he had bravely preserved to Secretary Jin. The Northwest Campaign ultimately achieved a glorious victory, creating favorable conditions for the nationwide counteroffensive. The people of northern Shaanxi, with their revolutionary traditions, once again wrote a glorious chapter in the history of revolutionary wars.
