Berlin in 1931. An environment straddling between rent-controlled apartments and the underworld, where brothels serve as artists' studios, Nazis are openly ridiculing on the streets, and Babelsberg dreams of producing "psychological films." Life pulsates, society ferments, and decay ensues. As long as there is work, Jacob Fabian, who holds a PhD in German studies, writes advertising copy during the day and spends his nights frequenting the city’s more absurd venues with Stephen Labude. His friend, who later admits to having "failed in the subjects of life and career," is ambitious when discussing communism and sex, while Fabian remains sober and detached. He awaits a "decent victory," though he doesn’t genuinely believe in it. His love for Cornelia is the only thing that leads him to question his ironic fatalism. She becomes a glimmer of hope in his crumbling life. Despite the many similarities to today’s criticized world, bringing Erich Kästner's deeply melancholic autobiographical novel "Fabian"—one of the most important novels of the Weimar Republic—out of its dark existence is a challenge. Dominik Graf navigates this challenge brilliantly. His style is subtly sharp, cold-bloodedly brisk, yet quietly melancholic. The film unfolds like a slowly rotating disco ball, exploring the connection between sexual acts and empty refrigerators, and the disintegration of happy dreams.
