In an English language class, French girl Odile (played by Anna Karina) meets two men, Arthur and Franz, who are young men obsessed with American culture, yearning for thrilling legendary stories. Odile quickly becomes attracted to the charming Arthur, gradually falling in love with him. The three of them often hang out together, cruising in a convertible. Odile is staying in a luxurious mansion, and she tells Franz that there is a large sum of cash stored in the house. Arthur and Franz plan to break in, but later Odile wants to back out.
