Henri (played by Jean Gabin) runs a nightclub with some lewd and flashy performances, where Laura (played by María Félix), who excels in belly dancing, is a star attraction. The struggling economy and Henri's poor management soon lead the club to the brink of bankruptcy. At this critical moment, Henri meets the ordinary laundress Nini (played by Françoise Arnoul), and he sees exceptional talent in her, creating the unprecedented dance form known as the "Can-Can." With the Can-Can, Henri's nightclub becomes popular again; however, the long-standing rivalry between Laura and Nini reaches a boiling point on the opening day. Later, a prince falls in love with Nini and intends to invest in the nightclub, but the envious Laura sabotages the deal.
