A massive earthquake triggers a volcanic eruption beneath Los Angeles, sending lava flowing towards residential areas and incinerating workers repairing underground pipes. Geologist Amy and her friends experience the horror first-hand when a friend is taken by a lava explosion during a tunnel survey. Suddenly, a corner of the city is filled with erupting magma. The crisis management center's commander, Mike (played by Tommy Lee Jones), follows Dr. Amy's suggestion to begin evacuation. They use millions of tons of aerial precipitation to turn the surging lava into obstacles, halting its flow. Just as everyone breathes a sigh of relief, Dr. Amy believes the lava hasn’t truly been stopped; it has merely changed direction and is now rushing towards a hospital filled with injured patients. They have only 30 minutes to resolve the problem. Can they succeed?
