Despereaux (voiced by Matthew Broderick) was frail and sickly as a child but had two enormous ears. He spent his childhood in the library, gradually learning to read and write. He loved the stories of heroes saving princesses from fairy tales and often imagined himself as a brave knight who would rescue a damsel in distress. During an outing, Despereaux met Princess Pea (voiced by Emma Watson). Eager to be a hero, Despereaux was banished by his father Lester (voiced by William H. Macy) for violating the strict laws of Mouseworld. In the vast lands outside the kingdom of Dor, Despereaux met Roscuro (voiced by Dustin Hoffman), a mouse who had also been exiled from his own country. Soon after, the exiled Despereaux learned that Princess Pea had been imprisoned in the dungeon. Driven by love for the princess, Despereaux decided to fight to save her.
