"The New Road of Hai Qian" is a 2017 Malaysian film written and directed by Soo Chong Hsing, a semi-autobiographical film about his family. The movie is set in Penang in the 1970s (a prosperous island in northern Malaysia with a large Chinese population) and is the first Malaysian film entirely in Penang Hokkien. The title "The New Road of Hai Qian" is a local term used by Penang residents to refer to Victoria Street in George Town (the city center of Penang), known in Hokkien as Hai Kin Xin Lor. Sunny (played by Lee Ming Zhong), who has not returned to his hometown of Penang for many years, finally comes back for this Lunar New Year to see his sister Ah Yun (played by Yang Yan Yan), two aunts, and old classmates. As a director, Sunny has always been a source of pride for his family, perceived as successful and having a fulfilling life. However, Sunny harbors an unmentionable struggle, caught between reality and idealism, and has run out of funds to shoot a film that is very important to him. The movie tells the story of Sunny's childhood and family, including a dark incident/tragedy that has cast a huge shadow over him, his incomprehension towards his mother, and his resentment towards his mentally ill brother. Faced with dwindling funds, external scrutiny, and the pressure of confronting his inner shadows and family scars, Sunny perseveres through a mission-driven calling. This film is a tribute to his mother's many sacrifices for the family and a journey of redemption that must be completed…
