In 1966, a ship floating in the North Atlantic became the base of a rock radio station beloved by British listeners. Carl (played by Tom Sturridge), who dropped out of school due to drug use, is sent here by his mother Charlotte (played by Emma Thompson) and meets music-loving free spirits like Quentin (played by Bill Nighy), The Count (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman), and Dave (played by Nick Frost). Meanwhile, government official Sir Alistair Dormandy (played by Kenneth Branagh) is determined to shut down the illegal station. As the government pressures the station's sponsors, revenue continues to decline. At this moment, Gavin (played by Rhys Ifans), who has gained international fame after two years abroad, decides to return and solve the station's problems. However, Gavin's return brings new issues within the station...
