Lin Jiali (played by Sylvia Chang) grew up in a physician family in a traditional town in southern Taiwan. She and her brother Lin Jiasen (played by Ko Ming-Hung) received elite education from a young age and graduated from prestigious universities. However, unlike her brother, Jiali is unwilling to be forced to abandon her lover Tan Weiqing (played by Hu Yinmeng) and accept a marriage arranged by her father. She resolutely leaves home and moves north to marry her lover Cheng Dewei (played by Mao Xuewei) and settle down in the rapidly modernizing city of Taipei. However, in the economically booming Taiwan of the 70s and 80s, business competition becomes fierce, and Dewei gradually gets lost in the world of money, socializing, and indulgence, ultimately losing himself. Feeling increasingly lonely and empty, one day, Jiali receives a call informing her that Dewei has drowned at the beach. She rushes to the seaside, facing a corpse that may or may not be her husband. Years later, Jiali reunites with Tan Weiqing, who has returned from abroad for a performance, and the two reminisce about the past in a café.
