The story takes place in the winter of 1820, aboard a whaling ship named the Essex, sailing in the vast South Pacific. Unknown to the crew, a highly intelligent whale with a strong desire for revenge lurks beneath the waves, ready to execute its vengeance plan. Soon, the whaling ship comes under relentless attacks from the whale, and the fragile vessel quickly becomes a wreck under the impact of the massive creature, resulting in heavy casualties among the crew. A group of survivors, including First Mate Owen (Chris Hemsworth), crew member Nickerson (Tom Holland), and Matthew (Cillian Murphy), huddle on a small boat, drifting in the vast ocean for 90 days. During this time, scenes of hell on earth are played out aboard the small boat.
