Mike (played by Mark Wahlberg) is a safety technician on the oil drilling rig Deepwater Horizon located in the Gulf of Mexico. After saying goodbye to his wife Felicia (played by Kate Hudson), Mike is set to face another 21 consecutive days of work. Mike has extensive work experience, and during his tenure, there have been no production accidents on the rig, earning him the trust of his superiors and colleagues.
The project manager Donald (played by John Malkovich) hopes to accelerate the extraction process, but Mike warns that this will pose significant safety risks. Donald ignores Mike's warnings and insists on his course of action, leading to a violent explosion on the rig. In an instant, flames engulf the workers, and 126 oil workers find themselves on the brink of death.
