The story begins during the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty. After spending over a decade living a humble life in the palace, Wu Meiniang, who was made a talent by Emperor Taizong, finally encountered an opportunity that made Taizong pay attention to her. As Taizong took notice, she gradually became familiar with the crown prince Li Zhi, and they both left a profound impression on each other, developing a strong mutual affection. After Emperor Taizong's death, Wu Meiniang followed palace rules and became a nun at the Gan Ye Temple outside Chang'an. Unwilling to spend her life in this manner, she created an opportunity to re-enter the palace when Emperor Gaozong Li Zhi visited the temple to pray. With the birth of her son, she rose from being a palace maid to the position of Zhaoyi, and then became the empress. With her unique wisdom and courage, she cleared obstacles step by step, eliminated her enemies, and firmly took her place at the top of the harem. After consolidating her position, Empress Wu began to assist her husband in governing. She decisively eliminated dissent, restoring power to the central palace. During this time, she proposed twelve political proposals, known historically as the "Twelve Suggestions," which Gaozong Li Zhi praised and permitted to implement. The couple governed the country in harmony, often referred to as the "Double Saints." In the absence of Gaozong, who was weak and ill, Empress Wu shouldered the heavy responsibility of state affairs, demonstrating remarkable governance abilities. The Tang Empire rose prominently among the nations of the world. After Gaozong's death, the political situation grew dark and confused. As the dowager empress, she resolutely deposed the incompetent and selfish Zhongzong Li Xian, swiftly quelling a rebellion originating from the royal family. With her decisive actions, she restored the country's political stability, which improved day by day, and people began to rally around this bold and wise woman. To secure the country, Empress Wu, responding to the will of heaven and public sentiment, ascended to the throne as emperor, becoming the first and only female emperor in Chinese history. After becoming emperor, Empress Wu implemented bold reforms and a series of political initiatives, achieving significant accomplishments. She reformed the imperial examination system, establishing examinations for the palace to select talent without restriction; she set up military examinations to cultivate qualified personnel for the army; she recognized and used capable individuals, filling the court with talented people; she vigorously promoted agriculture nationwide, reducing taxes and levies, ensuring that the people grew wealthy before the country became strong; she confronted foreign aggression without retreat, decisively pacifying the border areas; she respected Buddhism and Taoism, calming the conflicts between the two; her self-reflection led her to advocate for redress of wrongful imprisonments, rescuing many capable statesmen, including Di Renjie, from the hands of tyrannical officials... In the end, as her life approached its end, she did not allow her descendants to inherit the throne but returned the world to the Li Tang dynasty. She left behind a monumental uninscribed memorial for future generations...
