The story begins in the eleventh year of the Zhenguan era, when Ruyi (played by Fan Bingbing) participates in the selection for the imperial harem of the Tang Dynasty, stunning everyone with her performance of "Lanling King's Battle Song," attracting the attention of Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin (played by Zhang Fengyi). However, the proud Ruyi falls victim to treachery and is cast into the cold palace before she can gain favor. A year later, Ruyi is released from the cold palace, and her status in the palace rises, bringing her love and glory, but also placing her in danger.
Li Shimin is deceived by slander and leaves Ruyi; heartbroken, she shaves her head and vows to renounce worldly ties.
