British aristocrat Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) crosses the ocean alone to persuade her husband to sell their Australian ranch and return to England. In the northern Australian port city of Darwin, Sarah meets the cattleman Drover (Hugh Jackman). Drover drives Sarah on a lengthy journey to the ranch, only to discover the body of her recently deceased husband. Grief-stricken, Sarah intends to sell the ranch quickly, but her desire to protect a native child, Nullah (Brandon Walters), whom she just met, leads to conflict with the local farm manager, Neil Fletcher (David Wenham). With 1,500 cattle to be driven to Darwin Harbor for shipping, Sarah turns to Drover for help. The cattle-driving journey brings Sarah and Drover together in romance in Australia. After their marriage, their time together is short-lived as Drover's nomadic nature drives him to leave Sarah and continue cattle herding; meanwhile, Nullah, who was to participate in an Aboriginal initiation ceremony, is captured along with other mixed-race children and taken to Mission Island, while his grandfather "King George" (David Gulpilil) is imprisoned. At the same time, World War II breaks out, and the Japanese bomb Darwin Harbor, shattering the landscape. Will Sarah's family crisis be resolved? This film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Costume Design.
