The story takes place at the end of the Song Dynasty. The girl Ruonan meets the boy Jinge at a noodle stall in a bustling market. At that time, Ruonan, dressed as a boy, had just beaten up a pretty boy who had let down Chunhua of the Hongxiu Courtyard. Still angry, she was cursing him while anxiously thinking about Song Shijun's arrival. Jinge (played by Wu Jing), however, was on his way to carve a Guanyin statue with his monk master, who he depended on. Orphaned at a young age, Jinge became a disciple after his mother was killed by "bad people." He wandered the world, living by carving Buddha statues, living a simple yet happy life. With a kind nature and little understanding of worldly affairs, Jinge found Ruonan's harsh words strange, prompting him to ask his master if everyone in the world was like this, which made Ruonan furious. The two engaged in a heated debate. Thus, these two youths with special backgrounds embark on a turbulent journey through a chaotic era, from mutual hatred to love, ultimately supporting each other to become heroes in a lawless world. Among the twists, Jinge's mother was accidentally killed by the one-armed Wu Song, and the monk Lu Zhishen (played by Xu Jinjian) is the one who raised Jinge. Ruonan, who has deep feelings for her long-lost father Yang Zhi (the Green-Faced Beast), finds it unworthy but still loves Song Shijun (played by Guo Jianyong), a follower of Wu Song, who is self-centered and suave but seeks revenge for his father Song Jiang, willing to betray friends and country. Jinge discovers by chance that his father is the despised Ximen Qing. The tragedy of his birth, the deep enmity of his father's murder, and the misunderstandings from society due to his origins all entangle Jinge's immature heart. At the time, the Jin state has long coveted the territory of the Song Dynasty and is about to make a large-scale invasion. In this chaotic era, heroes emerge. The national crisis will push Ruonan, Song Shijun, Fang Baihua (daughter of Fang La), the self-proclaimed Xiao Li Kui Li Daben, as well as Wu Song, Lu Zhishen, and Yang Zhi, to the forefront, pulling the spirited Ximen Jinge into the tide of history. Ximen Jinge suddenly finds himself in deep crisis; amidst the contradictions, his hidden demons are noticed by Yang Zhi, almost leading him into a dark path. The brothers who vowed loyalty to each other misunderstand his origins and become enemies; the great hero Yue Fei, whom he fully supports, becomes the target of assassination by all his brothers and friends; and Song Shijun, who meticulously plans his demise, is paradoxically recognized by the public as a benevolent and righteous "Little Timely Rain."
