In October 1944, at the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, Polish and Hungarian Jews working in the crematorium are plotting a rebellion to destroy the furnaces, with a Polish man nicknamed "Moishe" (played by Steve Buscemi) in charge of coordination. Hungarian Jewish doctor Miklós (played by Allan Corduner) is receiving special treatment from guard Müsfelder (played by Harvey Keitel) due to his notable achievements in twin research, but he becomes embroiled in a conflict when he witnesses Hungarian inmate Hoffman (played by David Arquette) trying to smother a failed suicide victim with a pillow. The nearby women's prison's covert operation to smuggle gunpowder to the crematorium is exposed, and Tina (played by Mira Sorvino) and Rosa (played by Natasha Lyonne) are tortured to death. Just as Hoffman anxiously awaits the right moment for the rebellion, he discovers a barely alive girl amidst the corpses in the gas chamber. Should he save her? Would it interfere with the rebellion plan? Hoffman and his fellow inmates are at a loss... The film received the Freedom of Expression Award from the American Film Institute.
