The story takes place in June 1940 in Paris, France. A single mother, Odile (Emmanuelle Béart), is anxiously caring for her two children, Philippe (Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet) and Cécile (Clémence Meyer), as the imminent threat of war looms. When the sound of gunfire echoes through the streets, this strong mother unhesitatingly joins the group fleeing for safety. For the children, the long journey holds little meaning, and they struggle to understand their mother's decision to leave their home behind. The German aircraft launch a brutal bombing on the fleeing party, and although Odile and her children escape this ordeal, their belongings are consumed by the raging flames. Just when the three of them find themselves lost and uncertain of what to do, a boy named Ivan (Gaspard Ulliel) appears before them.
