The film is set in the 1930s during Stalin's reign in the Soviet Union. Kotov (played by Nikita Mikhalkov) is a distinguished leader of the Red Army with a prosperous family and a happy life, spending joyful moments with his wife Marusya (played by Ingeborga Dapkunaite) and daughter in their villa. Unexpectedly, an uninvited guest arrives. As he unveils layers of disguise, people recognize him—a long-lost and fallen noble, Mitya (played by Oleg Menshikov), who has been missing for ten years. Mitya's arrival is like a messenger from hell; as he narrates his story, the intertwined past grievances between him and Kotov, the old romance with Marusya, and the distorted lives shaped by the times unfold. More cruelly, he brings a piece of news that plunges the Kotov family into despair...
