This film tells the story of Mr. Z, the opposition leader in a South European country (a reflection of Greece) where a military regime has established a dictatorship. During a speech, he is assassinated, and the government claims it was an accidental car crash. People who cannot believe this explanation strongly demand the truth be uncovered. A prosecutor, upon hearing various signs from Mr. Z's colleagues, decides to resist political pressure and investigate further, eventually discovering that this was a planned political murder involving many prominent figures. However, those connected to the case are either exiled, imprisoned, or killed. Costa-Gavras gained fame with this film and sparked a new wave of political thriller movies.
