In 1760 Brittany, France, talented young female painter Marianne (played by Noémie Merlant) receives a commission to paint a portrait of a wealthy young woman, Héloïse (played by Adèle Haenel), without her knowledge before her marriage. The two are isolated on an island, where during the day the painter quietly observes Héloïse’s every move, and at night she passionately puts brush to canvas. Through their intimate interactions of painting and being painted, they gradually develop a forbidden romantic attraction, which intensifies as the wedding day approaches…
