The story takes place just after World War II, as Germany has fallen in the war, and most German soldiers have become prisoners of war, sent to POW camps. At a POW camp located in the outskirts of Leningrad, a new batch of German prisoners has arrived, guarded by a group of striking Russian women, whose direct superior is General Pavlov (John Malkovich). Natalya (Vera Farmiga) is a military doctor whose husband has gone mad due to the trauma of war. To protect her husband, Natalya reluctantly agrees to General Pavlov's request to come to the POW camp, attempting to uncover the hidden SS war criminals among the prisoners. In this grim and terrifying POW camp, both the guards and the prisoners have been deeply scarred by the effects of war, and over time, the positions and relationships between the two sides begin to grow subtle.
