Guy (played by Jeffrey Hunter) lost his parents at a very young age. Alone and lonely, he was adopted by a mixed American-Japanese family, gaining two brothers of American descent. Growing up in such an environment, Guy became fluent in both Japanese and English. The war broke out, and due to their ancestry, Guy's parents were sent to an international internment camp, while his two brothers enlisted as American citizens and were sent to fight in Europe. With his proficiency in Japanese, Guy was recruited as a translator by the U.S. Marine Corps. The U.S. military launched an assault on Saipan, which was occupied by Japanese forces, and Guy was sent into battle. Watching his friends fall one after another to the artillery fire, Guy felt immense sorrow. He requested to be sent to persuade Japanese troops to surrender, hoping to avoid unnecessary casualties.
