CW Briggs (played by Woody Allen) is the most outstanding insurance investigator at a renowned North Shore insurance company in New York during the 1940s. His specialty is being able to see into the minds of criminals, allowing him to solve cases with ease. Everything changes when his boss brings in "efficiency expert" Betty. Betty, new to her position, introduces new strategies and management styles, and Briggs becomes the first target. The tension between them is palpable. At a birthday party for their colleague George, they are called on stage by a magician, and under the spell of the jade scorpion, they are hypnotized, waking up with no memory of what just happened.
